Energy StarFor many years now, consumers have relied upon the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program to help them find products that are guaranteed energy savers. While you've likely heard of this program, you may not know what it means when products have been awarded the Energy Star Most Efficient label.

Those which have earned this designation have been deemed vastly superior in terms of energy efficiency, taking the already tough standards of the Energy Star program to a much loftier level. Learn more about what sets these products apart so you can choose the best one for your Cincinnati home's HVAC needs.

Criteria for Energy Star's Most Efficient 2014

When you're shopping for a new HVAC appliance, picking one that has earned the Most Efficient label is guaranteed to benefit your wallet and the environment in a way other products simply can't. And such products don't just adhere to the EPA's criteria for energy efficiency. They must also prove that they can operate at least as well as their traditional counterparts.

The following are the qualifying standards:

Furnaces

Furnaces must meet the Energy Star's most recent set of standards for its class. Each unit must have an AFUE of at least 97, and it must be equipped with communications, automated configuration and system status capabilities. For example, it should be able to send a fault code to signal the need for servicing.

Boilers

A boiler labelled Most Efficient must qualify for the Energy Star's most recent set of standards for its class. Oil-powered boilers must have an AFUE of at least 90, while gas-powered boilers must have an AFUE of 95 or above.

Central Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

These units need to meet the Energy Star's most recent set of standards for its class, including specific SEER, EER, HSPF and/or COP performance levels (where applicable). Central A/Cs, air-source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps must have communications, automated configuration and system status capabilities.
