What Is NATE?

In the 1970s, the HVAC industry began developing program of studies for the advancement and education of its members. As these programs are governed, owned, operated, developed and supported by those within the industry, it became known as the GOODS principle. One of the greatest developments toward training and education was the non-profit North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification program, which is now recognized and accepted nationwide to signify proven knowledge through rigorous and specialized testing.

NATE Testing

NATE tests are created and developed by industry experts with a genuine working knowledge of HVAC systems. The exams are all industry-focused, representing topics relevant to everyone from educators to contractors.

The tests themselves are based on a high level of knowledge and experience. Technicians can earn certification for service or installation in one or more areas including:

• Air conditioning
• Heat pumps
• Gas or oil heating
• Senior HVAC efficiency analyst

These certifications will remain valid for between three and five years, at which time recertification is required. To qualify, candidates must either submit proof of 60 hours of continuing education within their specialized field or retake the exam prior to the expiration date.
