Homeowners living in areas with cooler climates, like Cincinnati, can now enjoy the benefits of a heat pump approach by installing a ductless mini-split system.

Following some simple tips can ensure optimum performance even in cooler areas like ours, so read on to find out how a ductless mini split can ensure that your Cincinnati heating and air conditioning needs are met.

What Is a Ductless Mini Split?

Ductless mini splits are an efficient add-on method of air conditioning.

Unlike regular heat pump systems, they can operate year round even in colder climates. Follow some straightforward advice to get the best performance, even in cooler areas :

  • Lower that load - Reduce energy consumption within your home as much as possible to get ductless mini splits operating as effectively as possible. Enhancing the thermal envelope will cut energy usage and lower the size of unit required.
  • Sufficient sizing - Get a unit which is correctly sized to suit the lowest temperatures it will have to deal with. Check that piping is right-sized too. Understand that the system delivers a gradual buildup of heat in winter, and program accordingly.
  • Understand the interior unit - Be prepared for a little noise with the unit inside your home. To get the best performance, you also need to mount it correctly - at least 18 inches off the floor. This will also provide easier access to the filters, when changing/cleaning is required.
  • Protect the outdoor compressor - Mount it at least 2 feet from the ground. This is particularly important in colder climates as it means the unit won't have to sit in the snow. Installing a small roof to stop snow falling on top of the unit will provide added protection and efficiency.
