High-Efficiency Air Conditioning in Cincinnati: The Role of the Scroll Compressor

Are you in the market for a new air conditioner or heat pump that can deliver high-efficiency air conditioning? While several factors contribute to air conditioning efficiency, one of the most prominent is the compressor. When shopping for your next A/C or heat pump, don't settle for anything other than a scroll compressor. Here's why.
The compressor is the primary reason why an air conditioner requires more energy to operate than a fan. Because this component consumes more energy than any other part of the system, it's important to select it carefully.
The scroll compressor has been the key to transitions in efficiency requirements, including the recent 13 SEER minimum established in 2006.
How it works
A scroll compressor has one moving scroll that orbits in a path laid out by a fixed scroll. The orbiting movement creates pockets between the two scrolls. Gas is drawn into those pockets, where it moves to the center of the scroll and is discharged. As the gas moves into increasingly smaller and smaller pockets, the rising temperature and pressure match the desired discharge pressure, improving efficiency.
Compared to standard piston compressors, scroll compressors offer more reliable, high-efficiency air conditioning due to the following characteristics:
- 70 percent fewer moving parts
- Ability to start without dedicated start components
- Compact and lightweight, making service and maintenance easier
- Quieter operation
The industry is currently in a transition period between the old R-22 refrigerant and the more environmentally friendly R-410A version. The switch from R-22 to R-410A refrigerant is a cinch with a scroll compressor. This forward-thinking mechanism is designed for optimal performance with chlorine-free refrigerants, such as R-410A. That means the scroll compressor is not only more desirable because of its ability to achieve high-efficiency air conditioning, but also because of its industry longevity.
