running a gas furnace, Cincinnati, OhioA gas furnace is a safe and cost-effective way to heat your Cincinnati area home, but as with any appliance that involves combustion inside the home, certain safety precautions should be taken to protect your home and family during the heating season. Follow these tips to ensure safety when running a gas furnace.

  • Annual service - An annual furnace tune-up by a qualified HVAC professional is the most important preventive measure you can take to ensure the safe operation of your furnace. Your technician will perform a comprehensive test of your system, including checking gas and electrical connections to reduce fire hazards, lubricating the moving parts of the system to prevent overheating and checking for potentially deadly carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Replace your dirty air filter - In addition to improving your home's indoor air quality, the air filter in your furnace prevents dust buildup on your system which can cause it to overheat and damage the fan and heat exchanger. Check your air filter every month and replace it when it's dirty.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors - Every floor of your home should have a smoke detector and a CO detector installed to alert you to dangerous conditions in your home. Place your detectors as close to the ceiling as possible, and make sure there's one in close proximity to your main sleeping area. Test the detectors twice a year and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  • Maintain your furnace area - Store flammable materials at least 15 feet away from your furnace. Keep the area around your unit clean and free of obstructions in case emergency service is needed. Know the location of your gas shutoff valve and keep it easily accessible. Program your gas company's phone number into your cell phone or post it on your furnace and call immediately if you smell gas around your unit.
