Taking a Vacation? Don't Forget to Secure Your Cincinnati Home and HVAC System Before You Go

Going on vacation can be an exciting ordeal, whether it's a weekend getaway for you and your special someone or a family vacation with your spouse and kids. But no matter how excited you are, it's important that you take certain precautions so that your HVAC system isn't working too hard, and to ensure that your home remains safe for your return. To help you out, we've compiled a number of tips that will help you secure your Greater Cincinnati home.
Install a programmable thermostat -- If you don't have a programmable thermostat, you're definitely missing out. These somewhat new devices allow you to program the precise days and times that your HVAC unit is running. They even have a specific vacation mode.
- Easy on your HVAC equipment -- There's no reason to run your equipment on a regular basis when you're gone. If you're planning a winter vacation, though, it's important that you keep the heat going enough to avoid frozen pipes.
- Check your doors and windows -- You'd be surprised how many people go on a long vacation and forget to lock up either a door or window before they leave. If necessary, make a list of each one in your home and double check them just before you take off.
- Stop mail and newspapers -- The last thing you want while you're gone is to come back from vacation to a burglarized home. If mail or newspapers stacks up outside, that can be a beacon to nefarious types.
- Leave a key with a trusted neighbor -- The chance of something catastrophic happening while you're gone, like a busted HVAC unit or gas leak, is not very likely. But there's no reason to take a chance. Ask your neighbor to watch your house and provide him or her with a key to let your HVAC contractor inside.
