forced-air furnace, Cincinnati, OhioYou all know what your furnace does. It pumps warm air into your home to make you feel comfortable during the cold periods of the year. While you may know what the furnace does, most do not know what components are used to heat your home. A forced-air furnace system has several components that make it possible to heat your home to a comfortable temperature.

The following is a quick guide to the items used in your forced-air furnace system.

  • Thermostat - The thermostat tells the system to turn on when the temperature in your house cools to a set temperature, as well as tells the system to turn off when the desired temperature is reached.
  • Gas or oil burner - This is the heat source for the system.
  • Heat exchanger - This is a metal box where heated gases from the burner circulate. Cool air blows across the box to heat up. The gases created here leave the heat exchanger by way of a vent to the outside of your house.
  • Furnace blower - The blower pulls cooler air from the home and blows it across the heat exchanger where it heats up and then returns to the house as warm air through the duct system.
  • Air ducts - This system moves cool air from the home through the furnace where it's heated and then carries the warm air to your occupied space in your home. The ductwork system has cool air and warm air pathways.
  • Combination fan and limit control - This control unit turns the blower on and off at the proper times.

This quick guide will hopefully give you a better understanding of how your forced-air furnace system operates. While it's good to know the basics of furnace operation, the care and maintenance of your system is best left to competent professionals.
