troubleshoot heat pump issues, Cincinnati, OhioThe heat pump that tackles your HVAC needs is comprised of several parts, including an evaporator, condenser, heat exchanger, compressor, copper pipes and a control circuit. These interworking parts are not infallible, so it helps to know how to troubleshoot heat pump issues.

Here's some guidance on how to troubleshoot heat pump issues that arise in your home.

When your heat pump isn’t working:

  • Make sure that the pump is receiving power. The circuit breaker may have tripped or the switch may be turned to the “off” position.
  • Check the thermostat and move it up or down a few degrees to engage it.

When your heat pump isn’t heating or cooling:

  • Tinker with the thermostat settings and wait for the heat pump to engage.
  • Check that the air registers around your home are open and not blocked.
  • Check the heat pump filter and replace it if it's clogged or dirty.
  • Clean the coils of the outside condensing unit.

When your heat pump freezes or repeatedly trips the breaker:

  • Check the air registers and the pump filter.
  • Turn off the condenser unit and contact an HVAC professional.

When your heat pump is cycling in either a sputtering or manic manner:

  • Double-check the thermostat. The reading may be in conflict with the setting or the thermostat may be in need of repair.
  • Check the condition of the filter.

When the blower on your heat pump isn’t working:

  • Check the fan function and switch it to “off.” If it’s already off, the limit switch probably needs to be adjusted by a technician.
  • Inspect the belt that connects the motor to the blower. Replace it if it looks worn or frayed.

If the heat pump makes grinding noises:

  • Shut it off immediately.
  • Ensure that the cover panels are screwed on tightly.

You probably don’t troubleshoot heat pump issues every day, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you can't figure out how to get your heat pump working again. That’s when you should reach out to the experts.
