  • Efficiency rating: Every heat pump sold in the United States is required to have an EnergyGuide label. This label allows you to compare the heat pump’s efficiency rating with similar models. Look for a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating of 8 or higher for great heating efficiency and a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of 14 or higher for excellent cooling efficiency. Selecting a heat pump with the Energy Star logo means it’s one of the most efficient models available.
  • Advanced features: High energy efficiency is made possible by several advanced features working together. When selecting a heat pump, look for features that include demand-defrost control, a two-stage compressor, a variable-speed air handler and a desuperheater.
  • Other features: Some heat pump features are about more than just added efficiency. For example, a heat pump with a galvanized steel cabinet is more durable; certain grilles help minimize bothersome outdoor noise from the compressor; and copper tubing is easier to repair than flimsy aluminum tubing. Look for these features when selecting a heat pump for greater satisfaction in your investment.
  • Size: Sizing a heat pump is important because an oversized system costs more to purchase and operate while providing less ideal humidity control. On the other hand, an undersized system can’t keep up with demand and could lead to a less comfortable interior. Trust a qualified professional to size your heat pump.
  • Installation: Heat pumps can only function at their peak if they are installed properly. That’s why heat pump installation is not a DIY task. Instead of attempting the job yourself, allow the contractor you purchase the heat pump from to also complete a professional installation.
