Need Better Dust Control In Your Home? Try These Tips

Dust is a common household nuisance, and it can contribute to or aggravate allergies. Besides, dust is unsightly, collecting on household surfaces and contributing to uncleanliness. Unfortunately, it is not possible to completely eliminate all sources of dust, because most dust comes from fabric, people and pets. You can, however, improve dust control in your home by following these tips:
- Store clothing, linens, towels and other fabric items in plastic bags or boxes when you aren't using them. This storage method prevents them from shedding fibers (dust) when you open and close doors to access them, or move the items around.
- Install hardwood, tile or vinyl flooring instead of carpet when possible. Carpet traps dust, making dust difficult to control.
- Regularly replace heating and air-conditioning filters to prevent airborne dust. It is especially important to replace heating filters regularly during Ohio's long winter. If you have experts service your HVAC system, they will replace the filters and make sure the system is running as efficiently as possible.
- Consider installing an air-purification system, which can help to rid the air of harmful particles, such as dust and mold spores.
- When you clean, dust with a damp cloth or tacky rag, so that you actually collect and remove dust from surfaces. Dry cloths and feather dusters might move dust off of surfaces, but they often just spread the dust around, instead of removing it.
- Keep floors, especially closet floors, as clear as possible so that it's easy to remove dust.
- Turn your HVAC system fan on when you vacuum. Vacuums release dust into the air, and running the HVAC system will help remove dust.
- Take pillows and cushions outside and shake them to remove dust.
