Air purification systems today come with lots of options and in a variety of shapes, sizes and levels of effectiveness. The one that is best for your home will depend on a number of factors, including your family's health and the indoor air pollutants you want to remove.
Here are some important points to consider to help narrow your options:
- Particle removal. Air filters trap particles so that they are removed from your indoor air. UV lights kill microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria, but don't actually remove them. And ionic air purifiers remove particles only while the unit is running. The type you choose will depend largely on whether you are concerned about germs, allergens or odors.
- Efficiency. The efficiency of an air purification system refers to the percentage of particles it is able to remove from the air. People with asthma or allergies will want a higher efficiency, while for others a midrange efficiency may be appropriate. Efficiency also decreases over time, so it is important to change air filters according the manufacturer specifications.
- Particle size filtration. Unwanted particles come in many sizes, from larger particles like dust and pollen to smaller pathogens like bacteria and viruses. Not all air purification systems can handle all particle sizes; HEPA filters cover the broadest range.
- Gas and chemical filtration. Removing chemicals and gases requires different types of filtration systems, depending on the type of agent you need to be removed. It is best to know specifically which pollutant you are targeting before you make a decision to purchase a purification system to remove chemicals.
You'll also need to decide whether to use portable air purification units or a whole-house system. A whole-house system is effective in every room in your home.
